Cornyn Moves to Protect Vets’ GI Bill Benefits Despite Coronavirus School Closures
I released the following statement after co-sponsoring the Emergency GI Fix for Coronavirus School Closures Act, a bill to allow veterans to continue utilizing GI benefits despite many courses moving online to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Under current law, qualifying veterans receive GI Bill benefits to cover housing and/or living expenses when they attend a physical university in person, but those benefits are reduced by half for online programs.
Veterans and their family members taking advantage of the GI Bill to pay for school have earned those benefits through service and sacrifice. As we all make necessary adjustments to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, it’s important we protect those veterans and their family members who stand to lose their hard-earned education benefits through no fault of their own.
