Rep. Van Duyne Reintroduces Bill to Prioritize Mothers Over Abortion

Rep. Van Duyne recently reintroduced the “Caring for Mothers Act” to empower pregnant mothers who choose adoption over abortion.

The Caring for Mothers Act would give women access to health care by allowing families who are adopting a newborn child to put the pregnant mother onto the adopting parents' insurance plan during the time of the pregnancy and for one year postpartum.

"Pregnancy is no small feat and the courageousness of unexpected mothers considering adoption needs to be acknowledged. Many women feel as if abortion is their only option due to the high costs associated with carrying a pregnancy to term. By increasing health insurance access for women considering adoption, we can cut down on fears of financial burden while providing the critical support needed throughout pregnancy journeys,” said Congresswoman Van Duyne. “This life saving legislation not only makes it easier for mothers to choose adoption over abortion, it will also give countless newborns the right to life. While some of my colleagues claim ‘abortion is health care,’ I encourage them to give courageous women the REAL health care they deserve.”

The Caring for Mothers Act is supported by Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

"The pro-life movement has always been committed to serving both mother and child throughout all nine months of pregnancy and beyond - this includes birth moms, babies, and families who are adopting,” said Hon. Marilyn Musgrave, Vice President of Government Affairs at Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. “The Caring for Mothers Act is a thoughtful approach to ensuring that birth mothers and their children have access to medical care. Thank you, Congresswoman Van Duyne, for your commitment to supporting moms and babies across America.”

Background:

  • 40% of women cite economic concerns as the main reason for choosing an abortion. Being uninsured or unable to afford coverage falls under this umbrella.

Congresswoman Van Duyne’s bill empowers women in contrast with the extreme position of Congressional Democrats who have voted to allow taxpayer funds for elective abortions at any stage of pregnancy, including up until birth.

  • In July 2021, the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives passed legislation that would allow taxpayer funds to be used for elective abortions.

  • In July 2022, House Democrats supported legislation that would create a national standard to allow for abortions for any reason and at any stage of pregnancy up until birth.

    • This bill would override pro-life laws and prohibit states from enacting legislation that protects unborn children, such as protections for babies with Down syndrome and other disabilities.

    • The bill would undermine the health and safety of women by eroding the ability of states to hold sexual abusers accountable and undermining mandatory reporting laws that require health professionals, social workers, and schools to report instances of child abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect.

  • In the 117th Congress, Democrats blocked consideration of legislation to require lifesaving medical care for babies who survive botched abortions,

    • The Republican-led House passed the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act in January 2023 with nearly all House Democrats voting against it.

Congresswoman Van Duyne has consistently stood up for life and supported legislation to empower expecting mothers and families.

  • Earlier this year, Congresswoman Van Duyne voted for the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act which includes pro-family, pro-life provisions, including through an improved child tax credit.

  • In January 2024, Rep. Van Duyne spoke on the House Floor in support of Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach’s bill, the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, to protect funding for pregnancy resource centers.

    • In March 2024, Congresswoman Van Duyne questioned HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra about his unfair targeting of crisis pregnancy centers, which provide resources like diapers, prenatal vitamins, transportation, and parenting classes.

  • In January 2023, Rep. Van Duyne co-sponsored the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act which requires lifesaving medical care for babies who survive botched abortions.

  • In January 2023, Rep Van Duyne co-sponsored the Prohibiting Abortion Industry’s Lucrative Loopholes Act which closes existing loopholes to ensure that abortion organizations cannot profit off the sale of fetal remains.

  • In October 2022, Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne first introduced the “Caring for Mothers Act.”

  • In February 2021, Rep. Van Duyne co-sponsored the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2021 which prohibits the use of federal funds for abortions or for health coverage that includes abortions.
