De La Cruz Announces $5 million Grant for Edinburg Road Project

Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz announced on Monday a more than $5 million Department of Transportation grant for the Chapin Street Corridor Planning Project in Edinburg.

This project will fund the preliminary engineering for the redesign of approximately 3.8 miles of Chapin Street from Trooper Moises Sanchez Boulevard (SH 336) to I-69C. The design work will bring about significant roadway upgrades, including widening from 2-lanes to 3-5 lanes, a shared-use path, pedestrian crossings, traffic signal upgrades, a bridge upgrade, infrastructure removal, drainage improvements, and an EV charging station. These changes will not only enhance the safety and efficiency of our roads but also contribute to a more sustainable and modern community. Other activities will include environmental, geotechnical, and drainage studies.

“I am proud to announce this $5 million grant to improve roads in Edinburg,” De La Cruz said. “In Washington, I tirelessly advocate for the people of Hidalgo County and South Texas. This grant is just one example of how advocacy pays dividends for our residents. Whether it’s better roads or improvements to the McAllen International Airport or other projects across our region, I will not stop fighting to bring funds back to our communities to improve the lives of all residents.”
