De La Cruz Votes FOR H.R. 8281, Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, Supports Proof of U.S. Citizenship to Vote in Federal Elections

Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) issued the following statement after voting for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which prohibits states from registering an individual to vote in a federal election unless the individual provides documentary proof of U.S. citizenship.

“The path to citizenship is not easy, but the rewards are great. Among them is the fundamental right to vote. We must preserve this right and ensure that only U.S. citizens are registered to vote," De La Cruz said in a statement. “While citizenship is already a requirement to vote, it is not always easy to prove, thus requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register allows for fair and just elections, protecting one of the most fundamental rights of our country.”

This bill ensures the integrity of our elections by closing loopholes allowing non-citizens to vote. More than 10 million illegal immigrants entered the country under the Biden Administration, none of whom have the right to vote but can register and vote in certain states. The SAVE Act will restore voters’ confidence in the electoral system.
