Voice of the Conservative Vote: Dean Clancy

Dean Clancy leads FreedomWorks' public policy team, which coordinates the organization's activities in the areas of public policy, government affairs, and political action. The team's mission is to arm liberty-minded citizens with useful information to help them promote limited government and hold government officials accountable. Among other things, the team conducts policy analysis and advocacy; tracks, analyzes, and key-votes legislation; researches candidates for office; advises FreedomWorks PAC; counsels lawmakers; supports and cultivates legislative entrepreneurs; maintains our state-of-the-art Congressional Scorecard; and bestows our Freedom Fighter Award on policymakers who consistently stand up for their principles in the cause of liberty.

Clancy boasts an impressive resume and is knowledgeable on a broad range of domestic policy subjects, with special expertise in federal budget and health care issues. A self-described "recovering Washington insider" with nearly two decades of government service, Clancy has served as the top White House budget official on health care, Medicare, Social Security, and other major government spending programs (2004-2006). He has also served as a senior policy advisor to the House leadership (1995-2001), executive director of the President's Council on Bioethics (2001-2004), and a senior policy advisor on the Senate staff of the Joint Economic Committee (2009-2010).

Among his accomplishments:

  • Implemented White House budget policies that quietly saved billions in taxpayer dollars (2005)
  • Helped shepherd the historic Welfare Reform Act into law (enacted 1996)
  • Drafted the Homeschool Freedom Amendment (enacted 1994)
  • Secured legislation protecting severely wounded patients from rationing by Medicare bureaucrats (enacted 2008)
  • Helped devise the famous "health care charts" depicting the mind-boggling complexity of the ClintonCare (1994) and ObamaCare (2010) bills

Clancy joined FreedomWorks in late 2010. An expert on health care reform matters, he leads our continuing efforts to reverse the government takeover of health care and adopt a patient-centered approach. He has also helped guide several of FreedomWorks' major projects, including the Tea Party Debt Commission (2011) and the Freedom Platform campaign (2012).

When it comes to politics, Clancy describes himself as a "constitutional patriot" and "Madisonian Whig" who has been "Proudly Tea Party since 1773!" He is a staunch supporter of civil rights and equal justice under law and advocates for the restoration of a robust federalism and thriving local self-government. "Centralization and monopoly," he says, "are the great enemies of freedom." On fiscal matters, his idea of good government is "balanced budgets, sound money, and no income tax."

In his spare time, Clancy improves his knowledge of American political history by simply standing near John Campbell. He frequently draws pure and undistilled wisdom from the FreedomWorks Keeper of All Knowledge, Dr. Wayne Brough.

Clancy holds degrees from Georgetown and Columbia, is frequently quoted in the press, and has been a guest on such shows as NPR, Fox News, the Jim Bohannon Show, and Hardball with Chris Matthews. Born in Honolulu, he grew up in Aurora, Colorado. Today he and his wife and children make their home in the Old Dominion, the commonwealth of Virginia.

On a more personal note, Clancy describes his philosophy of life as "The Golden Rule and 'All men are created equal'—with a little Sinatra thrown in."

"Be of good cheer," he says. "There's always hope, life's an adventure, every day is an opportunity, and every person is a miracle—even the annoying ones."

"1913 was the worst year in American history because not only did it give us the federal reserve, which is a cartel of semi-private banks that basically manipulates the money supply and facilitates deficits of debt, but it also gave us the federal income tax, which enables the government to take massive amounts of money out of the economy and enables the redistribution of wealth."
