Undesirable Changes in the Republican Platform: Enforcement of Existing Immigration Laws Was Left Out

Changes to the Immigration plank in the RPT Platform pulls the rug out from under strict enforcement of existing Immigration laws. Norman Adams, a long-time unsuccessful supporter of Guest Worker permits for illegals, finally got his way with the 2012 Platform Committee. The construction industry and the Texas Association of Business has tried unsuccessfully for years to change the strong Immigration plank in the 2010 and earlier platforms to enable employers to legally hire those who have entered our country illegally.

A far-cry from the strong immigration policy that the state of Arizona is fighting to enforce through the courts due to the Obama administration’s lawsuit against the state, our Platform now calls for a policy which would permit applicants with prior immigration violations (those here illegally) to qualify for the program if they paid the appropriate fines; would waive any and all rights to apply for financial assistance from any public entitlement programs; only be able to work for employers that deduct and match payroll taxes (would this qualify them for Social Security and Medicare?) and be issued an individual Temporary-Worker Biometric ID card that tracks all address changes and both civil and criminal court appearances as a defendant. (p. 21 -- 2012 Platform).

The call for strict enforcement of existing Immigration laws has been removed and no requirement for employers to E-verify the existence of a Social Security number. Had time permitted on the floor of the convention, I would have moved to amend the Immigration plank to reinstate the strict enforcement requirement.

Much in the revised version sounds good, but the Guest Worker permits for illegals serves as a magnet for more illegals to enter our country seeking employment. No matter the called-for fees and fines mentioned, the cost to the taxpayers will escalate and the rule of law ignored.

Already illegals, other than Mexicans entering our country, are a serious threat to our national security. The Border Patrol agents should be authorized to shoot, if necessary, to stop the invasion. With land owners on the border being trashed and at least one owner murdered, the selfish interest of those who wish to hire cheap labor is shameful!

The likelihood that our borders will be secured in any meaningful way is, unfortunately, a pipedream that is unlikely to happen. Deportation of illegals enmasse is impractical and unnecessary if the job market would dry up.

If Congress would toughen up and give the correct intent of the 14th Amendment, the ‘anchor baby’ birthright citizenship problem would go away.

It is important that those of us who support strict enforcement of our existing immigration laws and E-Verify and oppose portions of the Platform or the proposed DREAM Act and other similar legislation supported by Senators Cornyn, Rubio and others let our voices be heard loud and clear. The invasion must be stopped!
