Senator Cornyn Honors the Civil Rights Act

I issued the following statement honoring the fiftieth anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, which is being celebrated at this week’s Civil Rights Summit at the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas:

With the signing of the Civil Rights Act nearly 50 years ago, President Johnson brought together Americans of all walks of life to make a solemn, public vow to at long last uphold the work of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Hector P. Garcia, Barbara Jordan and the many civil rights leaders who devoted their lives to the cause of equality. Today, we continue the work of ensuring that all Americans are afforded the blessings of liberty and the right to self-government, and that they are judged by the content of character, not the color of their skin.

We pay tribute to the president who acted courageously to remove obstacles to freedom so that ‘those who are equal before God shall now also be equal in the polling booths, in the classrooms, in the factories, and in hotels, restaurants, movie theaters,’ and every other public venue. We honor the sacrifices of the countless heroes in our nation’s history who gave their lives in pursuit of this liberty. And we pledge to continue their quest for a more just world.
