It's election season in Texas

Don't let this opportunity pass you by. There are several political entities in Texas holding elections this May, some of which started early voting this week. This is everyone's chance to have a real impact on the future of politics in Texas. It might be difficult to get excited about a local election in May, but voters should take notice. With gridlock in Washington bringing governance to a slow crawl, it is the perfect time to go local.

In Harris County, the most populous county in Texas, 445 people show up to vote on the first day of early voting. 445! You and your immediate family could possibly be the deciding votes in such a low turnout election. If you've ever wanted to make a difference in an election, it would be this one and others like it. Affecting political change at the national level requires a huge amount of money and connections. And in national and state level elections the probability of a single vote turning an election is quite low. But not in off year, off cycle local elections. Your voice will be prominent and your impact significant.

There is no need to look to the federal government to produce positive change when you can do it in your own backyard. One of the key components of federalism is a politically motivated local governance structure to counterbalance the authority of the national government. So not only does the average voter have a far better chance of advancing their ideas at the local level, doing so is essential for a proper balance of powers embodied in the Constitution.

Local politics should matter more because it does matter more. The things your local government controls impact you everyday in a very real way. Act now, go local.
