House Approves READ Act for Dyslexia Research

The House of Representatives Monday unanimously approved the Research Excellence and Advancements for Dyslexia Act (READ Act) (H.R. 3033), a bipartisan bill. The Caucus is comprised of over 100 Members of Congress and is dedicated to increasing public awareness about dyslexia and ensuring all students have equal educational opportunities. House Acting to Prevent Default of American Debt

Last week I released the following statement on the passage of H.R. 692, The Default Prevention Act, by a vote of 235 to 194, which takes a potential default on U.S. debt off the table by requiring the Treasury Department to continue to pay U.S. debts fully and on time, including Social Security payments if the debt limit is reached. Legislation to Curb Abusive ADA Lawsuits Introduced

Along with Congressmen David Jolly and Doug Collins, Wednesday I introduced H.R. 3765, The ADA Education and Reform Act of 2015. This legislation will curb frivolous lawsuits filed by cash-hungry attorneys and plaintiffs that abuse the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). Alleged Road Rage on New Mexico Highway Leaves Child Dead and Man in Jail

Issues: 

An apparent road rage incident on an interstate highway in Albuquerque, New Mexico, escalated to a shooting that killed a 4-year-old girl. A suspect in the shooting was arrested the following day and remains in custody on a litany of charges and a $650,000 cash only bond. Judiciary Committee approves bill based off successful reforms in Texas

The Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill he cosponsored that passed the Judiciary Committee on a 15-5 vote. The legislation, largely based on the CORRECTIONS Act Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse and I introduced earlier this year, builds on successful reforms implemented in Texas that reduced crime and saved taxpayers more than $2 billion. Last week, the House Select Committee on Benghazi interviewed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on what she knew about the attacks that killed four Americans in Libya in 2012. The hearing comes more than three years after the death of U.S. Ambassador to Libya John Christopher Stevens, U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith and two CIA contractors, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty.
